Attaching a file to a message

Last reviewed 2026-05-16 · About a 2 minute read

Messages aren't just text — you can send a photo or a small document right inside a conversation.

Step 1 — Open the conversation

Go to your inbox and pick the conversation you'd like to send the file in. Attachments aren't available when you're starting a brand new message — send the first one first, then attach to your reply.

Step 2 — Click the paperclip

Look for the paperclip icon in the bottom row of the message editor. Click it. A file picker opens.

Step 3 — Pick the file

Choose the photo or document from your computer or phone. The site uploads it and shows a small bubble for the file just above the text editor — with the filename, an icon (or a thumbnail for images), and a small × to remove it. You can keep typing in the editor below while you queue up more files.

Step 4 — Press Send

Add a few words if you'd like, then press the round send button on the right of the editor (or use Cmd+Enter / Ctrl+Enter). The other person sees the file right inside the conversation and can download it.

What kinds of files

Common formats work — JPG, PNG, HEIC, PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Files over twenty megabytes won't upload; for very large files, paste a link to Google Drive or Dropbox instead.

Removing a file before sending

Click the small × on the file's bubble to remove it before you press Send.

Privacy

Files inside a conversation are private to the people in that conversation. We never share them outside the volunteer community.
