Kinds of notifications you might get

Last reviewed 2026-05-16 · About a 2 minute read

The site sends you a notification whenever something specific happens that involves you. Notifications are organized into a handful of categories so you can choose which kinds you want to hear about. We use the same names below that you'll see in the filter chips on the notifications page.

Messages

A new direct message arrives, or someone replies to one of your one-to-one or group conversations. This is the chattiest category for most active volunteers. (The notification-settings panel labels this category Messaging.)

Events

A lot lives in this category — RSVP milestones on events you've organized, new events in your city, new virtual events, comments and replies on event posts, messages from organizers to attendees, follow-up notes after an event, plus all the shift notifications: day-before reminders, shift time changes, cancellations, low-coverage alerts for organizers, and dropped- volunteer alerts.

Groups

Someone joined a group you help run (admin/creator), a new post in a group you're a member of, you were promoted to admin.

Comments & mentions

Someone replied to your feed post, replied to a comment of yours, or the team pinned a national post. (Internally this category also covers @-mention notifications, which get their own @ icon in the list.) The notification-settings panel labels this category Feed in some places.

Connections

Someone sent you a connection request, or your request was accepted.

Likes

Someone liked your post, your comment on a post, or your comment on an event. This category is the most "noisy" — many volunteers turn it down or off.

Announcements

Site-wide announcements from our small staff team. Rare and usually important. (Internally labelled Admin.)

Moderation

Lets you know if a post or comment of yours was edited or removed by an admin. You can't turn these off — they're how we keep you in the loop on enforcement.

Support

Updates on a support ticket you've opened. These also can't be turned off.

Tuning the volume

For the categories that can be turned off, the notification settings page lets you do it per-category or per-type (e.g. keep RSVP milestones but mute shift reminders). See the notification settings article for the details.
