Signing up for an event shift

Last reviewed 2026-05-16 · About a 2 minute read

Some events ask volunteers to sign up for specific shifts — "set-up at 9 a.m.", "front-table at noon", "tear-down at 4 p.m." This lets the organizer cover the day without having to do it all themselves.

How to see the shifts

Open the event page and scroll down to the Volunteer time slots heading. Each shift appears as a row under the date it belongs to, showing the time, an optional label (like "front-table"), and a count line — for example "3 of 8 signed up", or just "3 signed up" if there's no cap.

Signing up

Click Sign up on the shift you can cover. A dialog opens titled "Sign up for this shift" with the date, time, an optional note field, and a Confirm signup button. Add a quick note if there's something the organizer should know ("running ten minutes late", "happy to bring my own folding table"), then confirm to add yourself.

If you're already signed up for an overlapping shift

If the new shift overlaps another one you've already claimed, the dialog shows a warning — "You're already signed up for another shift that overlaps this time. Sign up anyway?" — and the button changes to Sign up anyway. Use that only if you truly mean to cover both.

RSVP and shifts together

If the event has shifts AND you haven't RSVP'd Yes yet, the page may ask "Pick a volunteer slot or just say you'll be there?" before saving. Picking a slot also marks you attending.

Capacity

Each shift can have a slot cap. When all slots are taken, the Sign up button changes to Full and the shift can't be joined until someone drops.

Cancelling your signup

Plans changed? Open the event and click Cancel my signup on the shift you'd claimed. The slot opens up for someone else right away.

If you cancel within a few hours of the shift start, the organizer is notified by email so they have time to find a replacement.

Reminder emails

You'll get a reminder the day before any shift you're signed up for. The reminder repeats the time and any notes the organizer added to the shift.

Stuck?
