Leaving a group

Last reviewed 2026-05-16 · About a 2 minute read

If a group isn't a good fit for you anymore, you can leave it any time. It's a quick action that doesn't need anyone's permission.

Creators can't leave

If you created the group, the Leave group button doesn't appear for you — a group needs its creator. If you want to step away from a group you created, you'll need to delete it from Group settings instead.

How to leave

Open the group from your sidebar. In the top-right of the group header, click the Leave group icon button (the door/logout icon, with a "Leave group" tooltip). A Leave Group? dialog opens with the message "You will no longer receive messages from this group." Click Leave Group to confirm.

What happens to your posts

Your past posts and comments inside the group stay where they are. Other members can still see what you wrote. If you'd like something removed, you can edit or delete it before you leave.

What you'll see after

The group disappears from your My groups list on the Groups page. The group's posts stop showing up in your feed, and you stop receiving notifications and emails from the group. If you had an admin role, you lose it.

Coming back

If the group is Open, you can rejoin any time with one click. If it's Invite Only, a current member or the creator will need to add you back in.

Removing yourself from group emails only

If you'd like to stay in the group but stop the emails, change your notification settings instead — you don't need to leave.

Different from being removed

Leaving is your choice. Being removed by an admin is different and rare — see the help article on group leadership for more.
